Dr. Don W. Jones'

Visioning For Belief Relief

In Mental Fitness & Addiction Recovery

"WHAT IF ALL YOU HAVE TO DO FOR MENTAL FITNESS IS TO ENVISION IT? BELIEVE IT!"

- DON W. JONES, THE VISIONING DOCTOR

NEW FOR NORTHWEST OHIO

A recent addition to the Toledo area counseling community, Dr. Don W. Jones returns to his Northwest, Ohio and Southeast, Michigan roots after many years in private practice and social services in Florida. Established as a professional mental health and addiction recovery facilitator, Dr. Jones brings a unique and successful counseling approach to Lucas County and surrounding areas of Ohio and Michigan. The focus of Dr. Jones' private practice is two-fold:

  1. as a consultant to the mental health and addiction recovery service providers and
  2. as a counselor and life coach for individuals looking to get their lives unstuck from whatever is holding them back

Dr. Jones, who developed and authored Affirmative Perception Therapy, is committed to holistic healing on all levels. His Affirmative Perception Therapy methods have special appeal to persons who want to change unsound, irrational and limiting beliefs about themselves. Dr. Jones' premise is that these beliefs, which lead to harmful self-worth, self-esteem and self-identity issues, result in depression, domestic violence, addictions, criminality, compulsive behavior, codependency, spiritual and emotional crises and many other mental fitness distresses. As a result, Dr. Jones takes an approach to life coaching and counseling that benefits people who have been victimized by such conditions. Included in that list are people who have been bombarded by negative messages from family and society - such as child abuse survivors, trauma survivors, emotional/psychological abuse survivors, gay, lesbian, transgender persons, people of color, victims of hate crimes, ethically/culturally/religiously marginalized individuals and even people that had childhood bullying experiences.

A FEW WORDS FROM DR. JONES

"As a counselor, I am considered an alternative health practitioner coming from a very strong background of holistic health that accepts total health through good balance and grounded practicality of the mind/body/soul connection. With a keen personal history in universal spirituality, I embrace and honor the spiritual and religious aspects of my clients as part of their treatment, performing ordained outreach as part of my doctoral commitments.

I insist on using positive forms of brief therapy and life coaching that is strong on self direction and self determination, and by way of holistic therapy methods. Extensive research in both of my graduate degree programs revealed that cognitive therapy (thought-based approaches) is by far the most effective for most mental health needs, especially for addiction recovery. Although there are many cognitive therapies, I discovered that none claimed to be a holistic therapy that includes mind, body and soul. That led me to developing a method that fully included psychological, behavioral, physiological and spiritual components. For me, to achieve true and lasting mental fitness all four of those human aspects must be included in the healing and recovery process.

From additional research in my doctoral work, particularly related to metaphysics and quantum physics, I discovered statistical data that shows that lasting progress in mental fitness and addiction recovery is far better when cognitive counseling approaches involve active use of visualization, meditation and/or prayer along with positive self-talk. Therefore, I stress the use of a powerful process known as visioning with my clients so that they can to tap into the tools of quantum physics. This is cutting edge stuff. My educational background and credentials allow me to provide secular as well as nondenominational, intra-religious spiritual counseling that honors all religious beliefs. Assisting others in creating conscious personal change is the main thrust of my work in both individual and group work.

At the time that I was developing Affirmative Perception Therapy in graduate school I worked as a counselor and clinical supervisor, providing family therapy in a six week in-home program. From that experience I realized that I needed a therapeutic approach that was faster than traditional models and that allowed the client to be actively involved in his or her own treatment. I was determined to design Affirmative Perception Therapy to incorporate several components: The new model needed to be a:

  • visioning tool
  • holistic (mind body and soul) model
  • solution-based model
  • brief therapy style model
  • cognitive model

Fortunately, within the very blueprint of Affirmative Perception Therapy, I achieved a design of techniques that moves quickly, deliberately, and with determined focus that results in a framework that is decidedly brief, solution-based, and, of course holistic. What I later learned, after much use of the APT model, was that APT had yet one more component that was unplanned, but nonetheless significant. It turned out that APT is an excellent model that people can use on their own once they have learned the four steps. So the list of incorporated aspects of APT also includes:

  • do-it-yourself potential for clients
  • complementary or alternative tool for clinicians

DR. JONES' METHODS WORK FOR THOSE WHO SEEK CHANGE

What Affirmative Perception Therapy became, then, was the crowning achievement of Dr. Jones' career-long pursuit for a therapeutic tool that he could facilitate with clients effectively over a short period of time. After years of use, it clearly has demonstrated that it captures all essentials for successful and lasting change. The APT methods have since proven themselves to be remarkably simple, effective, and even likable.

Dr. Jones uses APT methods in Individual Counseling, Family Counseling, Couples Counseling, Group Counseling and in Psycho-educational Group sessions involving up to 12 individuals with at least one common issue. Dr. Jones also conducts self-help workshops for larger groups including those for clinicians wishing to learn how to use Affirmative Perception Therapy in their own practices as a complement or alternative to standard treatments.
